The Upper Lawn Pavilion was built by Allison and Peter Smithson in the late 1950s on the foundations of a ruined farmhouse, as their own weekend getaway.
The light structure was designed as a kind of “solar pavilion” – it was supposed to work without any heating and get all the warmth it needed just from the sun – a pretty revolutionary idea for the time!
The aluminum cladding and double glazing were meant to help with that – though apparently, it didn’t work all that well in practice.

The renderings of the building were created in spring 2012 as a personal project.

Capturing the mix and rawness of the materials in their brutalist look was one of the big challenges. But just as important to us was showing the dreamy, quiet poetry of this special place.
